Everything You Need to Know About Chronic Venous Insufficiency

  • Swelling

Chronic Venous Insufficiency (CVI) is in the news again, as President Trump was diagnosed with the condition after bilateral lower extremity swelling was observed during a routine medical exam. This is a common condition we see in both young and old patients, although women are at higher risk than men. Other risk factors include genetics and family history, multiple pregnancies and being overweight.

CVI is caused by what we call venous valve dysfunction. These one-way valves in the veins direct blood up from the ankles through the legs and back to the heart, but when they no longer function at full capacity, blood begins to pool in the lower limbs. Symptoms range from swelling, varicose veins, and aching to skin discoloration and ulcers.

Fortunately, treatment for CVI is very effective, durable and covered by most insurances. Standard management includes compression therapy, leg elevation, exercise, and lifestyle modification. Minimally invasive treatments, such as endovenous ablation, are frequent office-based procedures with little recovery necessary.
