Varicose vein treatment is a safe, effective, and minimally invasive way to improve both the appearance and health of your legs. At Capitol Vein and Laser Centers, our board-certified vascular specialists make the experience smooth and stress-free. Whether you’re scheduled for treatment or just considering your options, here are key tips to help you prepare and recover confidently.
What to Expect from Treatment
Our in-office vein treatments typically take 30–60 minutes, and you’ll be able to drive yourself to and from your appointment. Most patients experience little to no pain after treatment, and recovery is pretty quick in most cases. Of course everyone’s legs are different, so different people will respond in different ways depending on the extent of their varicose veins.
How to Prepare for Your Treatment
- Wear Comfortable Clothing: Loose-fitting clothes and shorts make it easier to apply compression stockings after the procedure. Shoes that are supportive and easy to put on and take off are ideal.
- Stay Hydrated: Proper hydration supports better circulation, improved treatment conditions and healing.
- Eat a Light Meal: A meal before your appointment can help keep you comfortable during treatment.
- Avoid Lotions or Oils on Treatment Area: Clean, dry skin is best for treatment and compression stocking application.
- Bring Your Compression Hose: You’ll be asked to wear these immediately after treatment—our team will guide you on fit and use. We carry compression hose in the office as well.
What to Expect After Treatment
You’ll leave the office able to resume normal daily activity, but there are a few key guidelines to support your recovery:
Do’s:
- Wear compression hose for three days after treatment to reduce swelling and promote healing. (If you have a condition that makes tolerating compression hose challenging, please let us know. You may be a candidate for a different treatment that does not require post treatment compression.)
- Walk – ambulation after treatment helps maintain healthy circulation and minimize risk of blood clots. So, yes, you may take your pup for a walk!
- Stay hydrated to support tissue repair and blood flow.
- Elevate your legs when resting to minimize swelling.
- Use over-the-counter pain relievers such as Motrin, Aleve, or Tylenol if you feel discomfort.
Don’ts (for three days):
- Vigorous exercise
- Heavy lifting
- High-impact activities
- Normal activities such as walking, going to the grocery store, attending a soccer match, cooking and cleaning are all totally fine (Bummer on the cooking and cleaning, right?).
Common Post-Treatment Occurrences
It’s normal to experience some of the following after your procedure:
- Bruising: Temporary and fades over time; using Arnica gel (available for purchase online or at local pharmacy) may help speed up the fading process.
- Localized Discomfort: Mild tenderness or soreness at the treatment site can occur, but is typically well-managed with over-the-counter medications.
- Swelling: Especially around treated veins; compression hose and leg elevation are key to reducing this quickly.
- Post treatment bleeding: Rarely happens, but if it does, elevate your leg, apply pressure and a cold compress to the site for 15-20 minutes. Call your physician if you have concerns.
