What to Expect: Sclerotherapy

  • Spider Veins

Spider veins are one of the most common concerns we see in our offices—and one of the most misunderstood. Many patients ask if they’re dangerous or if treatment is necessary, while others are simply frustrated by their appearance.

Here’s what to know about spider veins, how sclerotherapy works, and exactly what you can expect before, during, and after treatment.

What are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are tiny capillary veins that appear close to the surface of the skin. They often appear as:

  • Thin purple, blue, or red lines
  • Small web-like or branching patterns

They’re typically harmless and don’t cause physical symptoms, but they can become more noticeable over time.

While we don’t fully understand why some people develop spider veins, we do know they are extremely common—affecting both men and women.

Why is Sclerotherapy the Gold Standard?

Sclerotherapy is the most effective treatment for spider veins. During the procedure:

  • A very tiny needle is used to inject a specialized solution directly into the vein
  • The solution causes the vein to close off
  • The body naturally absorbs the treated vein over time

The treatment is quick, minimally invasive, and generally well tolerated, with little to no discomfort.

You may have heard about laser therapy, but studies and real-world experience consistently show that laser treatments tend to be less effective for spider veins and are often more uncomfortable than sclerotherapy.

What Happens During Your Appointment?

Sclerotherapy appointments are quick and convenient:

  • Duration: 10 to 30 minutes
  • What to wear: Bring shorts so we can easily access the treatment area
  • Before your visit: Avoid applying lotions or oils to your skin

Treatments are performed by our highly trained Sclerotherapy Nurse Specialists under physician guidance, across all of our office locations.

After Your Treatment

Recovery is easy and requires minimal downtime:

Immediately after:

  • Drive yourself home
  • Resume normal daily activities

Compression:

  • Wear compression hose for 12-24 hours after treatment

Activity:

  • Resume exercise the next day
  • Avoid long-distance travel for a few days

Heat exposure:

  • Avoid hot tubs and baths for 48 hours
  • Wait until day three before soaking

Appearance:

  • Mild bruising or discoloration may occur temporarily

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Spider veins don’t disappear overnight. Most patients need about three sessions, spaced over time. At your initial consultation, we’ll assess your veins and create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your goals. We’re also happy to offer a complimentary evaluation, where we’ll review your concerns, explain your options and provide clear pricing.

Possible Side Effects and Risks

Sclerotherapy is very well tolerated, but like any medical treatment, there are some potential side effects. These are typically mild and temporary:

  • Itching
  • Bruising

Allergic reactions are rare, and most patients experience little to no discomfort afterward.

Will Spider Veins Come Back?

Treated spider veins are permanently eliminated. However, new spider veins can develop over time, which is why some patients choose maintenance treatments every one to two years.

The Bottom Line

Spider veins are common, but they don’t have to be permanent. Sclerotherapy is:

  • Safe
  • Quick
  • Minimally invasive
  • Highly effective

If you’re bothered by spider veins, treatment can make a meaningful difference in how you feel about your legs. And as we often tell our patients: sometimes a small change on the surface can have a big impact on your confidence.
